For Sale: Pearson Ensign 998 "Allegra"
Allegra is under agreement - thanks for your interest!
Background
The Pearson Ensign is a fiberglass sailboat designed by Carl Alberg. A
2002 inductee to the Sailboat Hall of Fame, the Pearson Ensign is about as classic
as a fiberglass boat can get. She appeals to both the racer and the daysailer
alike. Her exceptionally spacious cockpit will fit six adults comfortably.
The extensive teak brightwork and beautiful hull lines give her a distinct personality,
separating her from the pack of many faceless modern designs. The Ensign Class
Association is very active, and still remains the largest full-keel racing class
in the USA. The Ensign is an exceptionally easy, stable, and forgiving boat to
sail, making her an ideal platform for learning.
As was common in the early days of fiberglass boat construction, the Ensign
has been referred to as "overbuilt".
She's rock-solid. Allegra is a 1965 model, and carries sail number 998. She's received continuous attention and care throughout
her years. She has had only three owners since new, and all have performed diligent maintenance and upkeep to both her cosmetics and systems. Her controls have all been modernized without tampering with the integrity and pedigree of
the original - Ensign class legal - design. She remains in all aspects a true
Ensign.
Recent Restoration
- All teak brightwork stripped to bare wood and refinished with Epifanes varnish in spring 2007
- New Interdeck deck nonskid painted spring 2007
- Cabin interior painted spring 2007
- All running rigging, blocks, and hardware replaced with Harken, Lewmar, or Spinlock components in 2006-2007 (see below for details)
What's Left On the "Nice To Do" List
- While Allegra's original mahogany rudder is completely functional for sailing, it could be glassed and faired to reduce drag and make the boat faster for competitive racing. As an alternative, replacement fiberglass rudders for Ensigns are also available from ensignspars.com
- A few layers of bottom paint have built up over the years. While not an excessive accumulation, the hull should be stripped, sanded or soda blasted back to the gelcoat if planning to race her competitively. I am a casual racer at best, so these items were not high priorities for me.
- Allegra is rigged with a spinnaker halyard, but I haven't yet added new thru-deck spinnaker blocks. I removed the original deck-mounted spinnaker blocks, which I will include with the sale.
- I'm not sure when the existing Awlgrip finish was done (it was painted
by a previous owner), but I'm guessing it's about 10 years old. It still
has plenty of shine left, but for those who are utterly meticulous, a new
paint job would make her topsides look positively stellar.
